Julian Rakhlin (b. 1974, Vilnius) is a violinist, violist and conductor. A student of Professor Boris Kushnir, in whose class he graduated from the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. Took lessons from Pinchas Zuckerman. Since 1978 lives in Austria. In 1988, he won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Amsterdam and began to actively collaborate with Lorin Maazel, and also became the youngest soloist ever to perform with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Chigi Academy in Siena awarded him an international award.
Gives more than 130 concerts a year in the most prestigious halls of the world. Among the partners in the ensemble are Itamar Golan, Denis Kozhukhin, Denis Matsuev, Misha Maisky, Sara Makelravi, Vilde Frang, Jeanine Jansen. In 2012 he performed with Jansen the world premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's Double Concerto dedicated to him at the Musikverein Hall in Vienna (in October 2018 he performed this concerto with Sara Mackelrawy for the first time in the UK). The musician also wrote works by Gia Kancheli and Richard Dubunion.
Collaborated with leading orchestras and famous conductors, including Vladimir Ashkenazi, Herbert Bloomstedt, Wolfgang Sawallisch, James Levine, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Yehudi Menuhin, Roger Norrington, Andre Previn, Mstislav Rostropovich, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Bernard Haitink, Maris Jansons, Valery Gergiev, Semyon Bychkov, Riccardo Chailly, Yuri Temirkanov and others. Participated in music festivals in Salzburg, Verbier, Schleswig-Holstein, Lucerne (Mozart Week) and others. The musician's recordings are released by Sony Classic. He plays the Ex-Liebig violin by Antonio Stradivari (1704) and the viola by Lorenzo Storioni (1785).
Julian Rachlin is Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra (Finland) and the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra (Norway). He teaches at the Vienna Conservatory and gives master classes in different countries; directs the Julian Rakhlin and Friends festival in Mallorca, is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
